Mel was born in Philadelphia, Pa. but grew up and attended public school in the little town of Gettysburg, Pa. There his parents owned and operated a motel. Life was full of chores, baseball, and bicycling around the national park.
Upon graduation from Gettysburg Area High, Mel attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX. He worked his way through school by performing such jobs as working in a library, security guard, bookkeeper, supermarket clerk, and working in a clothing factory. He graduated in 1973.
With a partner he started a lawn maintenance and landscaping business in Austin, TX. He was in business for three years before selling that business. With two other partners he started an a-Perm-o-Green franchise also serviced all of Montgomery County including Conroe, Lake Conroe and the Woodlands, as well as the Huntsville area.
In 1983 he started his own lawn maintenance and landscaping business. He had this business for 24 ½ years until selling it August 31, 2007. At the time of the sale the majority of his clients had been with him 20 years or longer.
In 1987 Mel and Laura were married. They have a son by Laura’s previous marriage and they have a daughter together. Their son, Rickey works for Wells Fargo Finance Co. in Houston, TX. Their daughter Allyson, is a student at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor, where she also plays soccer. Laura besides being a wonderful wife and mom was an integral part of the lawn maintenance business. She managed the office and the books.
Mel and Laura live in Kurten, TX. and are active members of Zion Church of Kurten. They are country folk at heart. Laura is currently working for Jim Ross State Farm Insurance Co. She started in December 2007 right before the Christmas Holidays and is pursuing her insurance licensing. Mel has just started here with equity Real Estate in June 2008. He hopes to build a business that is service oriented and is continually improving and keeping pace with the ever-changing real estate market.
